Recurrent splenic enlargement during granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor therapy in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome

A 66-year-old man with refractory anemia with excess blasts received three courses of GM-CSF and low dose cytosine arabinoside, concomitantly. An enlargement of the spleen as well as an increase in Ieukocyte count was observed with each course of treatment. The patient died of leukemic transformation following the last course of GM-CSF therapy.
